CJCJ Executive Director Daniel Macallair Appointed Co-Leader of Bay Area Scholars Strategy Network

We are pleased to announce that Daniel Macallair has been appointed co-leader of the Bay Area chapter of the Scholars Strategy Network (SSN). He joins Dr. Carina Gallo, Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice Studies, in leading the regional chapter.

Macallair has taught at San Francisco State University for 30 years, where his teaching and research have focused on criminal and juvenile justice reform. He is also Executive Director of the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice (CJCJ). Together with Dr. Elizabeth Brown, SFSU Associate Dean and a member of CJCJ’s Board of Directors, Macallair helped develop SF State’s interdisciplinary minor in Juvenile Justice.

The Scholars Strategy Network is a national organization that connects university-based researchers with policymakers, journalists, civic leaders, and community organizations to bring research and evidence into public policy discussions. Its Bay Area chapter brings together scholars from colleges and universities throughout the region.

In June, Macallair and Gallo attended SSN’s National Leadership Convening in Washington, D.C., where they met with members of Congress and congressional staff to discuss a policy proposal focused on repurposing vacant and underused juvenile detention facilities for community use. Together with SFSU graduate student Gabriel Singer, they are developing a proposal for a federal framework that could provide technical assistance, planning support, and potential funding to communities seeking to transform former juvenile halls into resources for housing, health care, education, youth development, and other community needs.

Macallair’s appointment expands CJS’s involvement in SSN and creates new opportunities for SF State faculty and students to connect research with policy and practice at the local, state, and national levels.
